[Tweet](https://twitter.com/share) Transformers are built to last. One would expect them to remain active and operational for long periods of time. ![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ienh-3DqqyhUDaJb7RbVWkH3OoFX7CGtzTchRogNHepVMJbNi-vAcDTNMSezFWCNfZp3IYahTlZ4p5pdlbOb4KevB9LTxuaeBZOdIkNt4rVpyP5UzIyBOYp2IxvN5ZyfcKIcF-PZld89w54OJw) There are plenty of places where a transformer can experience a failure; strong summer or winter storms, natural disasters, [weathering](https://abcnews.go.com/US/transformers-explode-hurricane-matthew-knocks-power-225000-florida/story?id=42636803) , cold and heat can affect some areas of a transformer very easily leading to failure and a leak or spill can occur. When repairs are untenable, and a pole or pad mounted transformer needs to be replaced, is when containment becomes a major factor. Leaking transformers are going to be losing oil based liquids (dielectric fluids). Keeping leaks contained can be as simple as having the right equipment on hand in order to keep the spill from spreading upon removal and transportation back to the repair facility. As happens with all equipment that is beyond immediate repair, replacement becomes the only option. As such the need to not only contain the leak, but the transformer as a whole, will become more important. It is here that [Transformer Bag Spill Kits](https://meltblowntechnologies.com/transformer-bag-spillkit/) from MBT become essential. They are an easy way to transport, contain at the point of removal and store leaking transformers: ![DSC02357](https://blog.meltblowntechnologies.com/hs-fs/hubfs/DSC02357.jpg?width=300&name=DSC02357.jpg) - *Multi layers and corded reinforcement will keep the bags from tearing at inopportune times.* - *Bags built to withstand either extremes of hot or cold weather means exposure from either will not weaken or break the bags and let the leaking transformer spill out.* - *Flexibility and light weight allow for easy handling and quick installation.* - *Meltblown polypropylene pads are included in each kit to absorb any leaked dielectric fluid.*  EPA laws, notably the [Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures](https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2014-04/documents/4_secondarycontainment_impracticability_2014.pdf) (SPCC), identify transformers as oil-filled operational equipment. This means that regardless of how large or small the leak is, measures must be taken to ensure the environment is protected.  Transformers are equipment like anything else, tools that can be maintained, updated, and ultimately replaced when they need to be. Be sure to have the necessary knowledge and tools on hand to do so.  MBT launched its own version of Transformer Bag Spill Kits to the Utility Industry and have a wide spectrum of sizes to fit any transformer from pole mounted to large pad mounted transformers currently in use throughout the world. --- **Want to Learn More?** We’d be delighted to discuss how we can help you contain transformer oil spills.
